Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in several interviews following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, after the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, he revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk externally. There is no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
