Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, located using intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several entry passages leading to the site... preliminary assessments are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," Healey added. "They were part of a great many British troops on duty over the holidays. This mission, to remove militants who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
